The Refiners

Henry Woo Sang, Jr., aka Uncle Henry, TechElder, Founder, CEO

I love tech. I started as an experimental nuclear physicist but didn’t want to make bombs. I prefer to see my tech in products that I want to see used. Working at Xerox PARC and HP Labs was a blast. There I learned not just R&D but also how to take new technology into new markets by doing primary customer research. Creating cross functional teams to go after new and disruptive business is a blast. Over the last few years, I have mentored 50+ tech startups and continue to find recurrent threads and needs. Training individuals the tricks, the traps, and the techniques is something that I always like to do. We are only as strong as our total team.

Cofounder, Smart and Legal Guy

Henry and I have traveled together since high school in Louisville. I became a venture capital lawyer based in Boston’s “Route 128” technology center where I advised start ups and major venture funds. I later moved to Milan, Italy, where I focused on international licensing. In addition to my law degree from Yale, I hold a Ph.D. in business economics. I spent the greater part of my career as a full-time academic; I am now a full (tenured) professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. I have focused on technology transfer throughout – and am currently working on the legal applications of artificial intelligence and quantum technologies.
